WEST MIDLANDS
The
West Midlands region in this guide comprises the counties of Gloucestershire,
Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands
including Birmingham and Worcestershire.
The heart of the West Midlands is the largest industrialised region outside
London in the United Kingdom and has a huge and interesting industrial
heritage. The surrounding areas contain some of the most beautiful and
historic places in England. To the west and south are the rural counties
of Gloucestershire, Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Warwickshire,
in parts is delightful with its historic towns of Stratford upon Avon
- Shakespears birthplace, Warwick with its famous castle and delightful
Leamington Spa. Staffordshire to the North includes the industrialised
Potteries area around Stoke on Trent and the Western part of the Peak
District. This has its own distinct character from the Derbyshire Peak
district.
