EAST OF ENGLAND

The River at Cambridge
Plough at Hartest, Suffolk
Plough at Hartest, Suffolk

The East England region in this guide comprises the counties of Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk & Suffolk. This region has a very long coast line running from the Humber to the Thames. All the harbours here are comparatively shallow water and is a popular area for small boats. This region used to be inaccessible until the advent of the railways because of the Fens, Epping Forest and the Lea Marshes. The main centres are around are beautiful cities of Norwich and Cambridge. The coastal areas of Norfolk and Suffolk are popular tourist destinations and comparatively underpopulated. The county of Essex to the south, because of its proximity to London is now very much a comuting area for London.
