Newark Castle stands by the side of the Trent. It was built in the 12th century. It was here where King John died in 1216. After the Civil War the town people of Newark were ordered to destroy the castle. Fortunately, their job wasn't completed. In recent years, some limited restoration of the castle has been carried out.
