The city of Derby is the traditional capital of Derbyshire situated on the west bank of the river Derwent. Derby is famous as a railway city with extensive rail links and industry connected with the railways. It is also the home of Rolls Royce engines used to power many civilian and military aircraft throughout the world. The city center has a wide variety of shops and stores. The 18th Century saw Derby as the birthplace of some of the most noteable achievements during the Industrial Revolution. Today the historic Silk Mill by the Derwent has become Derby's Industrial Museum (see below). Places of Interest
Derby's Industrial Museum, Silk Mill Lane, off Full Street, Derby DE1 3AR (tel. 01332 255308) illustrates major industrial names to which Derby owes its wealth and development. The importance of the railway, since l839, is also reflected in the displays of memorabilia and technology, including the history of the Midland Railway network and the new Railway Research Gallery.
The Derby Museum and Art Gallery, The Strand, Derby DE1 1BS Tel 01332 716659 is worth a visit. It llustrates the Arts, History, Natural History and Militaria associated with Derby, including the internationally acclaimed Collections of Derby porcelain (from 1750 onwards) and the world famous Joseph Wright of Derby paintings.
Pickford's House, 41 Friargate Derby, tel.01332 255363 a Grade One listed building, was built in 1770 by the architect Joseph Pickford as his family home and work premises. Other houses in Friar Gate, Derby's finest Georgian Street, were also designed by Pickford, but Number 41 is the only one which the public can enter and learn what domestic life was like in early nineteenth century Derby.
