The village of Shardlow is on the A6, 6 miles south east of Derby and 3 miles from Juntion 24 of the M1. Sharlow's character is derived from Mersey canal opened in 1777 that also passes through the village and the river Trent. It was once the hub of canal and river traffic in the Midlands.
The village was mentioned in the Domesday book in as Serdelav. Up until 1760 there was a rope hauled ferry that was replaced by the Cavendish Bridge. Steeped with canal history, it is still a popular stopping off place for canal travellers with its busy pubs and restaurants and there are many others not listed here worth a visit. Shardlow has a marina connected to the Trent and its own canal basin.
