The historic village of Winster is on the B5056 some 3 miles west of Matlock and was once a market town. To the south on the slope of the hill are old lead miners' cottages. The main street is very attractive and you may wish to spend some time exploring this village and its narrow and winding streets off the main street. The countryside around is on the one side limestone upland (White Peak) and gritstone moorland. The Miners Standard pub at the top of the hill at the back of Winster with commanding views derives its name from the Henry the VIII standard measure used in lead mining. There are many good walks around Winster.
