The village of Barlow is situated some 10 miles south of Sheffield and some 4 miles north west of Chestefield on the B6051 It was once an industrial village with lead and iron smelting and coal mining. Little trace of this now remains and the village is a commuting / farming village. Chesterfield to Hathersage road. The village dates back to at least the days of William the Conquerer who gave it to Ascuit Musard of Honfleur. His grandson was adopted the name Barley and when he died the name changed to Barlow. The old church of St. Laurence is 900 years old. Three wells are dressed in the annual well dressing - third Sunday in August. This tradition dates back to 1615. There are good walks around.
